The Honolulu Design Center is the most modern and contemporary building in Hawai'i. The intention is for this building to become the center of design activity in Honolulu. In addition to housing the modern furniture retailer INspiration, the facility has areas for events, exhibits, guest speakers and performances.
Other key components include a lighting design center providing a selection never before available in Hawai'i, a high-end restaurant experience, and a design café where people can meet and discuss creative ideas similar to the sidewalk cafes of Paris.
Site constraints, the demands of the client and the creativeness of the architecture team were major factors in creating a distinct building that picks up the subtle curves of surrounding buildings. The building is clad in bold materials that provide a transparent façade so that the inside can be experienced by anyone who passes by. Open areas are incorporated throughout the layout of the building as well as set-backs for the sidewalk to provide a feeling of movement.
