As a subconsultant to Versar, RIM Architects worked closely with Misawa Air Base and AFCESA to upgrade the existing structure of the Richard I. Bong Training Facility to meet current building codes and build a training facility addition to meet the growing needs of the Base.
RIM incorporated motifs of flight and Air Force history to achieve the aerodynamic look and feel for the project, including exposed structural trusses, glass walls and interior graphics. The new addition runs the entire length of the east façade with an exposed structural tubular truss reminiscent of aircraft hanger design. The east façade is an aluminum and glass wall system. To align with future planned parking and to add another vestibule entryway, we relocated the main entrance from the north face of the building to the east face. The north face continues an existing radial façade.
The redesign has new fenestration penetrations creating interesting surface features. The new east entry, with its high sweeping roof, will draw the attention to this new entry portal and paved plaza as seen from the new parking area. The sweeping roof is characteristic of airplane wing design with an uplifting effect.
Working under a strict budget and in response to the Air Force requirement to use the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design™ (LEED®) guidelines, RIM completed a state-of-the-art design for this facility.
